The pool addition brought two major challenges to The Structural Group: Determine a low-maintenance roof structure that could meet both the client’s request and structural needs, and develop a bracing technique that could adjoin the structural wall of a fully functioning school with minimal obstruction and impact.

For a low-maintenance roof structure, The Structural Group detailed a precast concrete double-tee roof structure spanning 110 feet. Beyond being the most efficient option, this roof style allowed the space to be column-free, creating full views for spectators within the pool environment.

We worked closely with the contractor to understand the challenges involved in erecting this structure and connecting it to an open and operating school. The resulting design streamlined required bracing in the final structure and reduced temporary bracing to minimize school disruption.

The finished natatorium is low maintenance and cost efficient, as well as a pleasure to use. The supporting structural steel frame allows for large windows on multiple sides of the space, bringing in ample natural light to complement the uninterrupted views. In addition to earning LEED® Silver certification, the project successfully delivers the eight-lane, 25-yard competitive swimming pool and spectator area, alongside shower facilities, offices and a public lobby with storage.
